Information for SRT Department Contacts
How the SRT is Administered
Students complete the Student Rating of Teaching (SRT) online. For semester-long classes, students are sent an SRT invitation by email 24 days prior to the last day of class (see data collection windows for all course lengths). Reminders are sent to students who have not yet completed their SRT at 12 and 2 days. Each student and course pair has its own unique link for the SRT. Students may take the SRT using a computer or a mobile device with internet connectivity.
SRT Steps for Department Contacts
The SRT department contact supports SRT administration by serving as the primary point of contact between the department and the SRT Support Team. They work with the department chair, class scheduler, and faculty on SRT administration and reporting issues.
Department contacts will receive an email from SRT Support once the semester’s SRT project has been set up for all courses. As soon as possible, and prior to SRT data collection, Department Contacts should complete the following steps:
- Review SRT setup
- Log into Student Rating of Teaching (SRT) system
- Check that all instructors are paired correctly with courses and sections.
- Check that data collection dates are correct.
- Make corrections in PeopleSoft as needed
- Please note that in order to be linked with a course, the instructor must be identified as a Primary Instructor, Secondary Instructor, or TA.
- Log into Student Rating of Teaching (SRT) system
- Review student enrollment information
- Work with class schedulers to check course and student enrollment information
- Make corrections in PeopleSoft as needed

SRT Forms
The University’s Administrative Policy on Evaluation of Teaching requires the evaluation of all courses taught at the University.
SRT forms are used to collect this data.

Alternative ways to gather student feedback
To prevent survey fatigue and low response rates, the SRT is designed to be brief and universally applicable to most courses. Each SRT item has undergone rigorous testing for survey design, usability, and statistical validity, with input from students, survey design experts, a statistician, and governance groups (Twin Cities, Crookston, Morris, and Rochester only). The SRT serves as a baseline survey instrument, providing long-term data for internal and cross-college benchmarking.
Instead of relying solely on SRT results for improving instruction, we encourage units to employ a variety of formative assessment techniques proven to have a greater developmental impact on teaching effectiveness. These techniques include:
- Early-term student feedback
- Targeted, periodic student surveys (using Qualtrics, Google Forms, or other instruments) administered during or after the term
- Review of student work (tests, essays, etc.) compared to stated course learning outcomes.
- The Center for Educational Innovation offers resources to help implement effective evaluation, assessment, and survey programs within your college.
Generate SRT reports for Promotion and/or Tenure Files
You can generate a standardized SRT report for a faculty member in Works, the University’s faculty activity reporting system. The report can be inserted into a promotional file directly.
- Log into Works and search for the “Student Rating of Teaching Report” in the “Reports” tab.
To generate a full SRT report that includes answers to open-ended questions, use the login link below this paragraph. All SRTs produce an electronic report for each instructor. The reports for online SRTs contain a summary of all responses, including the open-ended questions. Online SRT reports will be available approximately three weeks after the semester ends in the PeopleSoft system.
